Why the world cannot wait

I’d like to respond to the article ("On Nov.2: Can the world wait three years?") written about The World Can’t Wait – Drive Out The Bush Regime that appeared in Vol. 10, Issue 3 of The Phoenix.
While The World Can’t Wait—Drive Out the Bush Regime chapter here at SLC really appreciated the coverage, there are certain things in the article that were flat out incorrect and need to be addressed. First of all, The World Can’t Wait has nothing to do with communism. Yes, there are communists in the group, but there are a lot more people that are not communists.
The fact is, progressive Democrats, conscious Republicans, people of faith, communists and everyone else all need to be part of driving out this regime–and they are. To call our organization communist is not only untrue, it actually harms the movement that has a shot at driving this murderous regime out of power. Our organization’s unity is strictly based on the call to drive out the Bush regime, and that is all. Our organization doesn’t have an opinion on what to do after the Bush regime is driven out because we need to unite people of all kinds of opinions if we want to actually drive out this regime.
The author of the article wrote, "It seems a bit extreme that our country could ever revert to a society based on fascism." No, this idea is not extreme. This country is moving towards fascism. Just look at what this Bush regime has been doing here and around the world:
If the U.S. government believes you are even possibly related to terrorist activity you are stripped of all your rights. You do not get a lawyer, you do not have a trial and you are sent to a prison. Your family is not told where you are and the government never has to set you free, even though you were merely suspected (see: the U.S.A. Patriot Act).
In a recent bill defining torture, Cheney removed a clause that stated prisoners of war are not to be treated in an inhumane fashion and will not be tortured. This clause was removed on the basis that it would tie Bush’s hands and that we need the option of torture. Torture has been used on suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib and who knows where else.
Bush’s reason to invade Iraq and kill hundreds of thousands of people was that Iraq contained WMDs. There are none, yet the war still rages on with the casualties building up everyday. Why?
Representative Tom Coburn believes that doctors that provide abortion should be executed.
This government had a straight-up genocidal response to Hurricane Katrina, as Kanye West so accurately put it: "George Bush does not care about black people."
Representative Richard Baker was quoted as saying, "We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn’t do it, but God did."
Fifty-three thousand Katrina victims are being kicked out of their subsidized hotel rooms with no money or jobs. In the wake of this government’s murderous and slow response to Katrina, they are still treating the victims of Katrina like they are disposable and worthless.
The Christian fascist theocrats in our government are moving closer and closer everyday (check out the Alito nomination) to reverse Roe vs. Wade and a woman’s right to abortion.
In some schools in this country creationism is taught as equal to the theory of evolution and there are other districts where evolution simply isn’t taught.
Pharmacists around the country are allowed to deny birth control, and emergency contraceptives to people if they are morally opposed to birth control.
Gay marriage is illegal.
The United States used chemical weapons (white phosphorus) in the invasion of Falluja. It burns people alive.
The United States will not fund international AIDS prevention programs that even mention the word "condom"–they are only allowed to talk about abstinence. This directly contributes to the rise of AIDS in Africa. The Bush regime is responsible for straight-up genocide in Africa.
How can we look at all of this and not see that this country is heading in a seriously fascist direction? It is, and it is the duty of the people in the United States to unite and drive out the Bush regime before it is too late.
