Dear Sarah Lawrence Community,
Remember that political fervor that enveloped the campus in Fall of 2004? The ongoing voter registration drives, the canvassing trips to Pennsylvania and Ohio, the packed showings of presidential debates? Remember the political theatre productions, Phoenix articles, hand-made voter guides taped to dorm walls? The pins, the buttons, the banners, bumper stickers, and flags? Perhaps it has all been replaced in your mind by the memory of the general depression pervading the campus in the weeks following Election Day.
But the American political system is such that your opportunity to express your feelings about the national powers-that-be comes every two years. Although it may not be a presidential election year, 2006 is an immensely important election year.
This year’s election is your opportunity to tell your elected officials what you think of America’s current state. Were you horrified by the federal response to Hurricane Katrina? Are you worried about cuts on federal student aid? Were your opinions represented in the Samuel Alito hearings? Whether you support or oppose your representatives’ actions, now is the time to let them know!
If you’re not registered to vote, you can easily register yourself at http://www.rockthevote.com or by coming to one of the College Democrats’ registration drives, which will be starting next Monday at lunch in the pub.
Let’s make sure that Sarah Lawrence is heard at the polls this year!
